This painting depicts a sinister figure in a cloak, enormous and faceless, standing motionless against a backdrop of purple and blue. The darkness of its outline absorbs the light, and the heaviness of the silence is conveyed by broad, unyielding brushstrokes. It exudes an incomprehensible threat, a premonition of doom. In its hands it holds a large, curved blade, turned upwards. There is another character here — a human hand clinging to the blade, its fingers tense, trying with all its might to hold on. Its grip is the only fragile note of life in the composition, trembling against the backdrop of the huge figure towering above it. The sharp blade cuts through the fingers, blood dripping down it. The hand, painted in a contrasting colour, conveys both fragility and defiance, reminding us of the human will to survive. Even in the apparent hopelessness of the struggle, the man sacrifices a part of himself for the sake of life. Darkness thickens at the bottom of the painting, and the figure with the blade seems to grow out of it. The author reflects on emotional struggle, on despair in human life and the impossibility of giving up, otherwise life will end. The canvas does not need a frame; its edges, like the inner struggle, go beyond limitations.
