vvswan68 – Basilica di San Pietro, Rome
This painting, painted directly on a pizza box, captures the dramatic night scene of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The composition is framed by two rows of buildings in red tones that stretch into the distance, and pillars of lanterns. Rows of windows highlighted with dark lines emphasize the perspective. These architectural forms attract the eye to the shining dome of the basilica, which rises in the background, bathed in golden light against the background of a deep, relief sky. The sky itself is heavily colored deep blue, fading to black, with visible brush strokes that add weight and contrast to the illuminated buildings below. The few cars on the street are only discernible by the glowing taillights, reflected in bold and expressive brushstrokes throughout, which gives the painting a strong sense of movement and atmosphere. Barely noticeable traces of the original packaging design — bright yellow and blue Cyrillic inscriptions, as well as the shape of a cartoon slice of cheese — are visible around the edges, combining a classic theme with a playful, unexpected surface. The result is a vibrant, textured exploration of light and architecture, combining both reverence and humor.
