vvswan68 – Coast, cliffs (Belle-Ile-en-Mer, Bretagne)
This painting depicts a scene of the shore of Belle-Île Island in Bretagne, where tall, jagged cliffs protrude from the deep blue ocean.
The ocean here is deep, depicted in textured brushstrokes and dark blue hues. Closer to the shore, where it is not so deep, the tones are lighter. The ocean is turbulent, white spots of foam have formed on the surface of the water near the rocks, which gives the landscape a sense of the indomitable power of nature.
The focus is on the tall and rugged cliffs, painted in dark grey and black tones with subtle highlights highlighting their rough, rugged surface. In the foreground is a large rock rising vertically out of the water like a pillar. With texture strokes the author creates an impression of the stone being cut by water and winds, conveying the wildness of the seascape and its changeability under the action of the forces of nature.
The light-blue sky contrasts with the dark water, creating a sense of open space and serenity. Standing on the edge of a high cliff and feeling the gusts of wind, one feels as if flying above this element.
The artist’s use of the impasto technique emphasises the texture of the rocks and water, making the painting almost tangible.
The painting is one of a series of triptychs showing the beauty of Belle-Île. To create the impression of a connected subject, all three paintings are executed in the same colour scheme and style, as well as with the same horizon level.
