This painting depicts a serene scene of Provence nature with a view of the tranquil Lake de Saint Croix in the background framed by distant mountains. It shows a summer evening, the time of sunset. In the foreground are several young oak trees with golden spots of light on their bark from the sun’s rays, and dark green leaves. The curved trunks of the trees and their dynamic shapes give the scene a sense of movement and life. They look like figures of dancing people caught in a photograph. With the sounds of cicadas, the scene is reminiscent of a merry dance at sunset on the shore of a lake. The strokes are thick and textured, typical of the Impressionist style, emphasising the play of light and colour more than detail. The use of calm, muted shades - golden yellow, deep green and cool blue with violet - reproduces the harmonious and soft palette of a southern evening.
