This miniature painting shows a view of the Fontanka River on a very warm autumn night. This is the time when the water in the river turns a thick black color, and it seems that it is not water, but oil swaying in a tight stream between the embankments. The surface of the river reflects the lights of the city, and they glide with multicolored highlights across the blackness of the water. The water sways smoothly, lazily, enhancing the feeling of density. Along the river, buildings in the classical style are frozen in neat rows – St. Petersburg has always fascinated the author with its architecture. Meeting with the city after a very long separation caused the author a slight sadness and a smile. It has been about thirty years since he, as a very young man, strolled along these shores. Practically nothing has changed in the appearance of this place, and this makes it possible to mentally return to those years.
