This painting depicts a serene natural landscape, the lake Des Hermines surrounded by mountains, in the moment before sunset. The scene is rendered in an impressionistic style using thick, prominent brushstrokes. Several plans are clearly marked in the painting, that is done to emphasise the depth of the composition. The sandy shore in the foreground, leading the viewer’s eye towards the water, is covered with the footprints of people who spent time here during the day. The texture in this area is pronounced, giving it a tactile quality. The middle ground is occupied by the image of the lake, reflecting the sky and the surrounding hillsides covered with vegetation. A small island covered with trees is shown in the central part of the painting. The surface of the lake is rippled in places, and these places have shades of silver colour, to which the sun gives additional light shades of gold. Places where the surface is smooth reflect the surrounding slopes. As a result, the surface of the lake looks as if it consists of two environments - mirror and matte. Wooded hills and mountains can be seen in the distance, their shapes softened by the misty atmosphere. The dominant elevation is the ancient extinct volcano Puy-de-Sancy. Its view completes the composition of the painting. The sky, with shades of blue and streaks of light, is covered with haze, diffusing the light of the sun. The diffused light softens the semi-dusky illumination of the landscape and gives the effect of glow. The water of the lake, reflecting this radiance, is as if glowing. The general mood of the painting is calm, evoking a feeling of quiet solitude and unity with nature. The use of cold and muted colours enhances the calming effect. The painting can be hung on the wall without a frame, the image is transferred to the ends.
